Mpanga Forest Reserve is about 37 kilometers southwest of Kampala. This is one of Uganda's smallest natural equatorial rainforests. This magnificent forest covers 453 hectares and is located in the Mpigi district. If you enjoy nature, a visit to Mpanga Forest Reserve is worthwhile to explore the diverse forest species. The forest reserve is home to around 500 tree and shrub species, 300 birds, 97 butterflies, and 112 moths. There are also three monkey species protected within this little forest: vervet, red-tailed, and black and white colobus monkeys.
You can also see banded mongoose, squirrels, pottos, pangolins, and bush babies. Those who spend the night in Mpanga Forest have the opportunity to see notable nocturnal pottos and bush babies. The celtis, a hardy and weather-resistant tree species, dominates this woodland. The woodland is bordered by traditional drummakers. This forest reserve was established in 1950 and later in 1953. It began as a scientific research site.
