When you first drive up to Camp Crocs Ltd's dusty door, you may be unsure what to expect. However, what you'll discover is far more than your typical crocodile farm. Yes, there are over 3,200 live crocodiles moving around their enclosures, wiggling into the water as you pass by. But what you would not expect is the gorgeous open recreational space that appears just outside the farming property.
Camp Croc Ltd. was founded in the mid-1980s by a biologist who had previously worked on crocodile ranches in Zimbabwe. He came to Uganda and discovered a vastly unexplored market. With Uganda boasting the largest population of crocodiles per square meter in the world, it appeared like a no-brainer to produce a venture that worked in both conservation and harvesting.
As you continue to explore Camp Crocs, you will notice that the concrete dwelling units give way to a lakeside park. Large open grassy spaces with picnic tables, swings, slides, and a fire pit become visible. The hill is lined with four spacious and tidy cottages that may accommodate couples, groups of friends, or entire families. The restaurant is located right beside the cottages. With a pool table and indoor seating (in case of rain), as well as lots of outdoor sitting if the weather permits. If you visit on weekends, you will discover the freshest crocodile flesh and a lively atmosphere. It is typical to see university students, families, friends, and couples. There is also a wide grassy field where people can camp with their own tents, or play sports if they bring a football or Frisbee.
Canoes and small boats (with life jackets) are also available for those wishing to venture out onto Lake Victoria. Despite the great number of crocodiles nearby, swimming around the campsite is absolutely safe. There is a natural, grassy jetty that is ideal for picnics and fishing (poles provided).
To get to Camp Crocs Ltd., travel the Kampala-Masaka Road until you reach the town of Buwama, around mile marker 68. You'll see a sign for Camp Crocs approximately a kilometer before turning left. Your turn will be directly across from a Delta gas station. Off the main road, turn left and follow a well-maintained gravel road for a few kilometers. At the end, you will reach their gate. Cabins often fill up quickly on weekends, so book ahead of time.
