Are you on your way to see the mountain gorillas or just searching for a place to rest on your journey? Visit Bushara Island Camp, a popular resort on Lake Bunyonyi ("Lake of the Little Birds"). The camp, which is the first of its kind, serves as a stopover for gorilla excursions, a birdwatcher's sanctuary, and a private retreat location. This small island is tranquil, quiet, and natural, appealing to day tourists and families, and a haven for tired travelers. Bushara Island is the ideal setting for getting away from it all and relaxing in the midst of nature. The lush hills and papyrus marshes give many opportunities for bird watching, while Eucalyptus trees and shady nooks along private paths provide calm spots to sit and read a book.

Bushara Island Camp is a sustainable eco-tourism facility that promotes environmental awareness and conservation. The camp grew in response to the demands of the residents of Lake Bunyonyi. Bushara Island Camp is part of the Lake Bunyonyi Development Company, a locally operated non-profit company. Profits from the campsite benefit local communities surrounding the lake through activities such as agro-forestry, small livestock distribution, artisan co-ops, and hospitality internships for local college students. Your pleasurable stay on Bushara Island significantly benefits the local community!

The volcanic lake is bilharzia-free and suitable for swimming, canoeing, and, for the more daring, jumping off our rope swing. In addition, we provide cultural tours, nighttime canoe tours, bird watching tours on the island and surrounding the lake, and walking routes and benches for quiet times. Aside from the natural backdrop, Swallow's Nest Restaurant provides pleasant, high-quality service as well as a diverse menu of excellent and reasonably priced meals. Our deluxe safari tents and cottages offer a selection of comfortable self-contained accommodations, all in a private setting with a view of the lake.

Lake Bunyonyi's Eucalyptus trees, papyrus swamps, and flowery plants support over 200 bird species, including the Harrier Hawk, Fan-tailed Widowbird, Pin-tailed Whydah, Red-chested Sunbird, Tropical Boubou, Grey-capped Warbler, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Paradise Monarch Flycatcher, and Red-billed Firefinch.
