Uganda Buddhist Centre

On April 10, 2005, the Most Ven. Bhante Buddharakkhita (Africa's first Buddhist monk) launched the Uganda Buddhist Centre (UBC).

The Center was formed to introduce and maintain the Buddha's teachings in the context of African culture, as well as to demonstrate Buddhist practice through public service.

UBC currently achieves this through meditation retreats, humanitarian programs, and initiatives aimed at fostering global peace.

Historical Context

The Uganda Buddhist Centre (UBC) was founded on April 10, 2005, by the Most Ven. Bhante Buddharakkhita, the first African Buddhist monk. Before its establishment, Buddhism had a presence in Africa, notably in Tanzania and South Africa, but it remained largely unknown among African people. Bhante Buddharakkhita, born Steven Jjemba Kaboggoza, introduced Buddhism to Ugandans in 2005. His journey began in India, where he encountered Thai Buddhist monks and was inspired by their lifestyle and spiritual practices. He pursued further studies and training in countries like Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal, and later in the United States, where he was ordained and trained as a monk.

Foundation and Growth

Upon returning to Uganda in 2005, Bhante Buddharakkhita established the first Buddhist temple in Uganda on two acres of land in Bulega-Garuga, Entebbe. This temple is located about 5 kilometers from the Entebbe-Kampala Road. Under his guidance, several individuals, including his family members, embraced Buddhism. Over the past decade, volunteers from around the world have supported the development of the UBC, contributing to its construction and various activities.

Present Day

Today, the Uganda Buddhist Center stands as a beacon of Buddhist practice and education in Uganda. It offers free programs and ceremonies to the public, emphasizing universal access to Dhamma. The center attracts a diverse group of individuals, both local and international. One of its notable features is the "Mirembe" Buddha statue, donated by Thai devotees, symbolizing peace with its distinctive African facial features. The center also operates a school, providing free education to the local underprivileged community.

Facilities and Future Plans

The UBC includes a temple, sima, and a small Stupa, with future plans to build accommodation for monastics and lay practitioners. It continues to serve as a place of meditation, scholarship, and public service, fostering peace and spiritual growth in Uganda and beyond.
