Steve Williams, an Englishman, created Kyaninga Lodge. Standing one day on the lip of Kyaninga's old crater lake, he was inspired to start on a stunning revolutionary undertaking. His imaginative concept culminated in a breathtaking luxury lodge unlike anything else in Uganda.

The local people were trained in the skills needed to construct the lodge over a two-year period. It was created without cranes or lifting machinery over a six-year period using locally obtained sustainable wood. It now relies almost entirely on solar electricity.

Kyaninga Lodge was finished in 2010, a truly remarkable accomplishment of creativity and collaboration, leaving a team of competent Ugandans to continue eco-building in Uganda.

The outstanding design and enormous magnitude of the main lodge are immediately obvious as one crests the hill and sees Kyaninga Lodge.

Log cabins are environmentally benign, taking 8 times fewer trees to build and emitting fewer greenhouse gases than normal dwellings. Kyaninga Lodge has made investments in reforestation and sustainable building principles. Staying in Kyaninga reduces your carbon footprint.

The emphasis was on sourcing all building materials locally to match perfectly with the landscape. This includes the stone pillars, which are built of the volcanic rock that forms the crater, as well as all of the lumber utilized, such as eucalyptus for the logs and Elgon Olive for the furniture. Even the grass used for thatching is a local Semliki type. Experts from Europe were brought to educate the locals on various trades such as thatching, masonry, welding, carpentry, electricity, and plumbing. All materials were placed into position by hand. More than 130 individuals were needed to finish the project.

The restaurant is housed in the main building, which also includes two raised galleries for those who prefer to take in the view in privacy. Breakfast and lunch are provided in the restaurant or outside on one of our terrace tables.

The bar area has an outstanding double-sided open fireplace, which is lit every evening around sunset.

Below the main lodge are two decks outfitted with comfy loungers, with steps hewn from local volcanic rock that lead down to the swimming pool and onto two lawned terraces overlooking the deep blue water and primeval forest of Lake Kyaninga.

Our chef creates a daily menu that celebrates both local and foreign cuisines, featuring the best local ingredients sourced from our own kitchen garden and nearby markets.

Meals are served in the main lodge's dining room, which is decorated with finely textured Elgon Olive and Mvule furniture manufactured on-site and has outstanding views on both sides.

A broad wine list from our cellars guarantees that every dish has the ideal companion.

Special dietary restrictions can be accommodated upon request.

Kyaninga Lodge believes that our guests should depart feeling invigorated both physically and spiritually. You might choose to relax by the pool or indulge in one of our spa treatments.

Our Wellness Center, located on a cantilevered platform on one of the lawned terraces, offers some of the best views of the lake at Kyaninga Lodge.

Our Wellness Center employees have received considerable training and use locally derived seasonal ingredients in their treatments, which include Chinese, Swedish, deep tissue, and aromatherapy massages, facials, reflexology, manicures, and pedicures.
