KABALE/ LAKE BUNYONYI
+256 75 2558222

Kwanzi is a small sanctuary nestled in the heart of Kabale's bustling town. The strategic location provides a vantage point from which to enjoy all of the amazing attractions that make south-western Uganda famous. Kabale is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and valleys that are ideal for hiking adventures, and it is on the way to national parks teeming with wildlife, the impenetrable Bwindi rainforest, home to the rare mountain gorilla and other primates and wildlife, and Lake Bunyonyi, "the lake of a thousand birds," which is dotted with islands and birds, just as the name implies. There are almost 150 bird species here.

. On a clear day, one can see Mt. Muhavura in the distance, which is thought to be the same volcanic peak that previously formed these breathtaking surroundings. A memorable exotic trip may be booked right here at Kwanzi, which also functions as the booking office for the award-winning Gorilla Highlands. Ruth and Billy, a seasoned restaurant entrepreneur, join the new crew at this former Edirisa. With new ownership comes the new name Kwanzi, a new website that is still under construction, and the wonderful hospitality that only an owner-run hotel can provide. Profits from Kwanzi are donated to Grace Villa, a girls' orphanage in Kabale that Ruth founded and runs.

Everything that made the previous Edirisa a popular resort is still present. From the affordable lodging prices to the delicious meals and welcoming atmosphere,. The menu is being revamped to combine the former famous European menu with exquisite indigenous Ugandan cuisine. One of the guest rooms has been transformed into a small Grace Villa shop, selling carefully selected African crafts, beautifully fashioned African outfits and products made by the Grace Villa girls tailoring line, and baked goodies from their Graceful Grains bakery. Dine informally or enjoy a cup of chai on Kwanzi's open-air rooftop deck, which is ideal for hot days, or in the more typical inside restaurant.

The main component downstairs has a small covered patio, a more formal dining area, three rooms with sleeping capacity for up to 14 people (one of which is a huge 10-sleeper dormitory), and a bar area that is being turned into a coffee bookshop. The area continues to provide a rare cultural gem: Kabale's only cultural museum, meticulously assembled and documented by historian and cultural specialist Omugurusi Karwemera. The museum includes a traditional Kikiga complex with a gated cottage from ancient times, as well as a collection of common and unique objects. Musical instruments, weapons, kitchenware, furniture, clothing, and even a village granary.
